Something’s afoot in Castlecomer.
Thanks to Kilkenny County Council a new footbridge is on the way for the North Kilkenny Town.
It won’t necessarily be a brother or sister or indeed a first cousin of Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Waters.
But it should be a god-send as it will be a safe and sound link between Caisleán an Comair and its wonderful showpiece, the local Discovery Park.
Good news is that the proposed bridge over the River Dinan, adjacent to the existing masonry and arch bridge will not be on the méar fhada.
It will be built during what our lockdown-weary people hope will be a long, hot summer and opening date is in someone’s diary for November, an early Christmas box for ‘Comer and environs.

The contract has been awarded to Kenny Civils & Plant Ltd and the bridge is being funded through Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
The bridge is a two-span steel structure that will traverse the Dinin and should greatly improve pedestrian safety at this location.
